Acrylic is a type of plastic. You may also hear it called:
- Acrylic sheet
- Perspex®
- PMMA
- Plexiglass
These terms are often used interchangeably, although Perspex® is actually a brand name for acrylic.
Acrylic is popular with makers because it is lightweight, durable, easy to clean and available in a huge variety of colours, finishes and thicknesses.
And for laser cutters in particular, acrylic can be fantastic to work with.
It cuts cleanly, engraves beautifully and can be layered, glued, bent and combined with other materials to create all kinds of products.
