Acrylic terminology: a quick cheat sheet

Acrylic
A versatile plastic sheet material.

PMMA
The technical name for acrylic — polymethyl methacrylate.

Perspex®
A brand name commonly used to describe acrylic sheet.

Cast acrylic
Acrylic made by casting liquid resin into sheets. A popular choice for laser cutting and engraving.

Extruded acrylic
Acrylic manufactured by extrusion. Useful for many applications but behaves differently from cast acrylic.

Thickness
The depth of the acrylic sheet, measured in millimetres.

Gloss
A shiny, reflective surface.

Matte
A softer, non-shiny surface.

Mirror
A highly reflective acrylic surface.

Glitter
A sparkling acrylic finish with glitter incorporated into the sheet.

Laser cutting
Using a laser to cut shapes and designs from suitable materials.

Laser engraving
Using a laser to mark or remove the surface of the acrylic.

CNC routing
Using a computer-controlled cutting tool to physically machine the acrylic.
